Giannina (nee Chiarotto) PEGOLO Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Giannina Pegolo on February 24, 2025, in Niagara Falls, at the age of 100, after a long and fulfilling life.
Giannina was born on October 8, 1924, in Biauzzo, in the Italian region of Friuli, to Guglielmo and Maddalena Chiarotto. After immigrating to Canada at age 29, Giannina married Francesco. They settled in Merritton in 1953 and later moved to Thorold. Giannina was a devoted wife for 54 years before Francesco's passing in 2007, and she was a loving mother to her two daughters. She worked hard throughout her life as a factory worker in both Codroipo and Niagara. Giannina was also dedicated to her faith and to her community, as a member of the Holy Rosary Church, and a past member of the Fogolar Furlan Club of Niagara.
She enjoyed spending time with family and friends over a meal and a coffee, and loved watching her favourite team, the Toronto Blue Jays. She generously showed her love for others through her cherished gifts of crocheted blankets and through her cooking - her pasta, gnocchi, and crostoli were second to none. Giannina will be remembered for her enormous heart and cheeky sense of humor, as well as her bravery, spiritedness, and strength gained through all of her life experiences.
Giannina was predeceased by her husband, Francesco, her beloved daughter, Sandra (2005), whom she greatly missed, as well as her brothers and sisters, Antonio, Margherita, Irma, Ugo, Pierino, Agostino, Desiderio, and Giovanni.
She is survived and will be dearly missed by her daughter, Anna Lisa (Scott). Memories of Nonna will be fiercely cherished by granddaughters, Lauren (Jeremy), Sarah (Alan), and Katherine (Derek); grandson, Sean; and son-in-law, Paul (Patricia). Giannina was also Bisnonna to her great-grandchildren Benjamin and Zoe, who brought her so much joy. Zia Giannina will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews both in Canada and Italy.
The family will receive friends at the HAINE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 26 Ormond Street South on Friday, February 28 from 7-9 pm. Funeral liturgy will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church (21 Queen St. S, Thorold) on Saturday, March 1 at 9:30 am. Rite of Committal will be held at Lakeview Cemetery Mausoleum. If so desired, expressions of sympathy in memory of Giannina can be made to Operation Smile Canada, as she felt strongly that every child deserves a smile. A special thank you to the staff at the Meadows of Dorchester for their compassionate care.
